Instructions for fixing the crackling volume control symptom
on various models of M&K subs

PURPOSE
Some Subwoofers exhibit a symptom where the speaker "crackles" or "rumbles" when the volume control is turned up or down, even a tiny bit. There may be a "hot spot" where this happens most of the time and/or there may be "dead spots" where this does not happen at all. This occurs whether any audio input is connected or not. We have determined an effective fix that works nearly 100% of the time.
PROCEDURE

1) Obtain some spray contact cleaner. Typical brands include:

Do NOT use WD40 or "automotive type" sprays which say "Contain Petroleum Distillates".
Do NOT use "flux removers" or attempt to flood the control with isopropyl alcohol.
Do NOT use products such as "TAPE HEAD" OR "VIDEO CASSETTE" cleaner(s).
It IS safe to use cleaners which say "CONTAINS SILICONES" or "SILICON LUBE"

2)  Disconnect the sub from the AC power and the audio sources.

3)  Remove the backplate.

4)  You MAY want to completely disconnect the amplifier plate from the rest of the sub; this entails unplugging TWO wire harnesses. However it is not NECESSARY to do this step.

     4 a)  Reach inside and pull out some of the fiberfill, and you will see the wire and connector assemblies.

     4 b)  Holding each side of the connectors, wiggle them apart.

5)  Spray the volume control as shown above, and work the control back and forth 50 times.
Try and get the spray INSIDE the control. A short 1/2 second spray is PLENTY.

6)  Wait 10 - 15 minutes and repeat --- a short spray, then work the control back and forth 50 times.

7)  Carefully wipe or dab up any excess overspray with a paper towel.

8)  Plug the Power Supply and Driver connectors back in and...

9)  Screw the amp plate back in the cabinet.

10)  Plug the AC power back in and turn the amp on.

11)  You should be able to rotate the volume control and hear NO crackling.

12)  Reconnect all your audio connections and try it.

This procedure is succesful in most instances.
