JL Audio InWall Sub (IWS) page
Updated for 2015
NOTE: DEPENDING UPON YOUR BROWSER, EACH LINK OPENS INTO A NEW PAGE OR NEW TAB

This page has all the information relevant to the JL Audio InWallSubs. For example, if you lose some of the paperwork included in the packaging you can get it here. The filenames are fully named so if you forget where you put one after you download it (!), you can search for JL_Audio.

To most efficiently order and install the IWS system, you should follow these steps.
Please read EVERYTHING on this page before ordering your IWS system.

1)  Determine, empirically if possible, by doing the crawl-around test with a boxed JL sub (e.g. an e110, e112, f110, f112, f113, or -gasp- even another brand of reasonable sub) , where in your room you want to put the inwall(s) and how many. If you cannot make the determination as to the MOST accurate place to put the IWS, then please follow the simple guidelines on Pages 6-10 of the user manual.

Here is the USER Manual: JL_Audio_Fathom_IWS_Manual.pdf 3.6Mb

2)  You must then choose which ENCLOSURE SIZE to order. The enclosure size is determined by the DEPTH of the studs in the room. See the chart below.
3)  The larger enclosure size uses different amplifier settings than the smaller enclosure size - the 2 separate amplifiers are adjusted for the box size and the impedance they will see when under load. Therefore there are 4 separate amplifiers, to drive one or two smaller or larger enclosures. See the chart below. You CANNOT mix larger and smaller enclosures with the same amplifier. Therefore if you are going to use two IWS in a particular room you would have to order both enclosures the same size.  To clarify, The DIFFERENCES between the power amp models is that the internal EQ and other control circuitry is different depending on the enclosure "size", and whether it's driving one or two drivers. That's why there are "4" models.
4)  After the enclosure is correctly mounted in the wall space, determine the correct wallboard thickness of the front and order the grille. Notice there are 9 grilles. The enclosure MUST be mounted in a fixed space, with the correct compression of the foam. Do not attempt to "float" the enclosure and then put a nylon cloth over the front as a "soffit". If you must have a certain soffit "look" then you must build the front wall with the grille and THEN place the nylon covering over that.

Here is the Order Configuration Chart for 2015 and also the PREVIOUS CHART (2012, 2013, 2014) below. (no prices shown)
Note that the 3 grilles have CORRECT suffixes of X Y Z. You MIGHT have a PDF which INCORRECTLY shows them as A B C.

Here are the Warning Labels for all 5 ENCLOSURE SKU's.
Be sure you understand the mounting procedures necessary before you order the IWE enclosure size you might need.
Be aware that the actual relevant SKU No. is in rather small numbers at the bottom right of each page of the 5 pages of the PDF.

Here are some other pictures and info which should prove to be helpful.
Above, the full face of the IWS amp. Below, showing the controls only.

Above, the back view showing the connections. Certain builds might look slightly different.

Now take a look at how the gimbal mount works:

Above: 2 views showing how the gimbal mounts to a top 2x4 member. The 2x4 does not have to be at the top of the ceiling, since you have the angle brackets to work with. IN GENERAL, the LOWER the driver is mounted in the room, (relatively speaking) the more LF energy will be coupled. The HIGHER the driver is mounted in the room, the tighter the higher bass frequencies will be coupled to the listener.

If you have not done so, please study Art Noxon's acoustics articles here:
www.asc-home-theater.com/ht-articles.htm

Please do not simply decide to install some IWS in the room without at least some sort of planning. Besides consulting with an acoustics consultant (a very good option) if possible, when the room is still a shell, bring in a boxed sub such as the Fathom 112 or 113, and do a series of crawl around tests to determine the optimum locations. Then install your IWS at those locations.

Here's a tip: if the layout of the room is relatively symmetrical, and you decide to use 2 IWS, you can use the 2KW amp to drive both IWS. If the room is very asymmetrical, and the sub locations are oddly placed, it might be better to use TWO x 1KW amps because you will then have separate control over the phase of each sub, not to mention separate ARO.

This shows the RELATIVE sizes of the "A" vs "B" ENCLOSURES.
Note you can drag the pictures with your mouse to line up the top or the bottoms, or to experiment with placement height !

drag me ! drag me !
Notice that ideally the choosing specs suggest a wall that is 8' high.

Below, here's an installation done by a dealer where there was a height issue: there was a decorative built-in unit going on the wall on the area BELOW where the IWS had to go. Therefore it was raised up as far as possible. More info on this pix coming too.

The above is a working diagram intended to show the RELATIVE sizes and dimensions. This is what you should use as a guide.
